CHAPTER FOURTEEN
âYOU BOYS NEED to fix this. Not only are you half-brothers, but youâre brothers-in-law now.â Haisley tapped the toe of her cowgirl boot against the floor in irritation. She moved her persuasive, narrowed gaze from Cruise to LB in several demanding swipes. âDo you understand me?â
âI know I might be the problem most of the time, but what happened at your wedding wasnât my fault,â Cruise said through ground teeth. âAnd because youâre married to my sister, I let the sucker punch go. Most men would be eating dirt if they dared.â
LB stood straighter, looking at Cruise like he had a lot to say but feared his wifeâs reaction. When Haisley cleared her throat, LBâs frown relaxed. âFine. I owe you an apology, Cruise. I allowed my protective side to get the best of me.â
Cruise was a bit put off by the apology. He knew exactly where it came from. Haisley had worked her magic. If the man had the audacity to punch an innocent man, then he should at least stand by his decision. âJust donât let it happen again.â
âIâm sorry how I reacted, Cruise,â Haisley said. âAja explained what happened with Ashley and her date. I should have never invited her, but I thought sheâd changed.â
Cruise snorted. âSnakes donât change, sis.â
âI assumedâ¦â
âYeah, that I stirred up trouble,â he muttered. He was still a bit cross over the entire situation.
âIâm truly sorry. And thank you, fellows, for putting aside your hatred. Itâs important to me. To us.â She reached for LBâs hand. âOur baby should come into this world without any drama.â
It took Cruise a moment to catch on. âYouâre pregnant?â
âYeah. Itâs early, but I had a doctor confirm the pregnancy this morning.â
Cruise whipped off his hat and slapped it against his thigh. âDamn, that was quick, but congratulations you two.â He brought her in for a tight hug, but then gently released her. âSorry. I didnât hurt the baby, did I?â
She laughed and settled her hand against her still flat stomach. âNo, you didnât hurt the baby.â
âCongratulations, Hais. And LB.â Cruise thrust out his hand and LB stared for less than a second before he took the offering. âIâm happy for you both.â And he was. âHell, Iâm going to be an uncle,â he said proudly.
âShh. Not so loud, Cruise. We havenât told anyone but you. I want to tell everyone at dinner.â Haisley craned her neck to look down the hallway to make sure they were still alone.
âIs this your way of buttering me up after you believed the worst in me?â
âYes, but I also wanted you to know first.â Her eyes filled with moisture. âYouâve always been there for me. All through my childhood. A little too protective at times, but I know you had the best intentions.â
Cruise felt a heavy weight lift from his shoulders.
He didnât want there to be any issues between him and Haisley.
However, he had a confession. He thought it best to tell her what happened with Rose Lee so Haisley didnât find out later.
